Enjoy a glimpse of this powerful tree fable, written and beautifully illustrated by Lysa Leland. Timely and thought-provoking, it explores the transformative power of interspecies thinking and care.
THE TREE: an allegory

Every day four African animals come to visit a lone tree in the savannah. Each animal uses the tree to satisfy its own particular need, unaware that they are causing the tree’s demise. When the tree suddenly succumbs, they react angrily– against the tree. A man appears, intending to cut it down. The animals find themselves joining together to protect the tree that had freely given them so much. This crisis leads to their “enlightenment” and how that transforms both the animals and the tree.
The main purpose of The Tree is to create greater awareness of our impact on the environment: how detached we have become and how we can reconnect. It speaks to both children and adults and can be read at different levels of understanding.
Lysa Leland studied primate ecology and behavior for nearly twenty years in an African rainforest. She has written and co-written over a dozen scientific and popular publications. Lysa is deeply concerned about the future of our Earthome. The Tree is her first (privately) published children’s book. She both wrote and roughly illustrated it. E-mail: lysaleland@gmail.com
