Spider fables

When this project began, I never imagined that the spider would come to play such a prominent role. A huge thank you to Dr. Winsome Monica Minnot for helping me organize the ‘Anansi and Bre’r Rabbit: Transatlantic Fables’ session as part of the Global Fable, and for building the Anansi fable page, as you can see below.  I am especially grateful to Prof. Lisa-Jean Moore, who designed the spider fable workshop titled ‘As the spider extends its web, one’s destiny unfolds: The Cultural Value of Spiders’ for this project. This workshop led to an exciting art/science collaboration in the form of “How to Read a Poem to a Spider.” Apart from Lisa-Jean, who has also worked on the spider-goat, our team includes Nathan Morehouse, an expert in spider vision who provided scientific insights; Noongar writer Cass Lynch, who volunteered to weave our ideas into fables; British artist Josie Turnbull, who joined us to visualize and materialize these fables; and Kaori Nagai, who grounds our conversations in the fable genre. Please also see below Cass’s amazing spider fables ‘Silken Cities’, inspired by Italo Calvino.
